An athlete from Bath is to help develop sport in a part of Iraq.

Olympic bronze medallist Kate Allenby, now a teacher in the city, will join British athletes, coaches, sports organisations, charities and educators in the Kurdistan Region on Monday, for an international sports conference.

Over the two-day conference, the British delegation will meet with senior ministers and policy advisors from the Kurdistan Regional Government to share knowledge and experience. Their contribution will help the region's Ministry of Sports and Youth to develop an inclusive sports policy to unite and empower people throughout the region, which is rebuilding itself after war and genocide.

Allenby said: "I'm very excited to be travelling to Iraqi Kurdistan to share my experiences with the region's policy makers. I am deeply passionate about getting people engaged with sport, not just because it's about physical activity but because it can help people to develop life skills as well as create a positive environment and a wealth of opportunity."

Kurdistan is an autonomous region in Iraq, bordering Syria to the west, Iran to the east and Turkey to the north.
